The Wood Science and Engineering major was one of only four majors when the university was founded in 1952 and, in the ensuing 70 years, thousands of students have been educated. In 1954, with the help of Dr. B. A. Curikov from Leningrad Forestry College in the Soviet Union, this major offered the first Chinese graduate class in the mechanical processing of wood. The students of this graduate class went on to become academic leaders of other universities, which means that this major can justifiably be regarded as “the cradle of China’s wood science educational program and engineer training”.
